Info links: here (note: I’m linking this because it has a general summary of his arc in the manga. I’m aware their listed spelling of his name is different, but frankly I’ve got no idea where they got that from.)

Canon Point: Pre-series

Gender & Sex: Male

Age: 18

Birthdate/Sign: September 21/Virgo, non-canon. While Eric doesn’t exactly exhibit the trademark perfectionism or organization that most people immediately associate with the sign, he fits many other aspects. He can be critical, often unfairly and bitingly so, to the people around him, even if they don’t deserve it—he doesn’t spare himself from this either, and has a low sense of self-esteem. He’s cautious when approaching something for the first time, slow to trust anything new that comes into his life. His irritability is high, and often comes across as ill-tempered when something or someone gets on his nerves. Eric’s past is something that’s greatly affected the person he’s become today, and while he’s moved on from it (in the physical sense, at the very least) it’s still left a lasting imprint on him, and echoes of his history are still very present in his habits and behavior. When he’s not being cranky or distant, Eric’s very shy about approaching people, preferring to stay back and observe to actually going forward and putting himself out into a situation with others. Even if he wants to interact with them, his initial reaction is very timid, avoiding direct approaches.

Tattoo: about 2 square inches, on the back of his right knee

Suitability: --

Power: Red Aura; a fiery, destructive aura that Eric can access as a member of the Red Clan. This would be greatly limited in Zodian initially, leaving him only able to light up the palms of his hands.

Personality: Eric first appears half-dead in a pile of trash on the streets of Shimizu city, passed out in the rain. Upon being rescued by Fujishima, a member of the street gang known as HOMRA, his first reaction is not gratitude, but anger and aggression. He practically growls at his savior upon his introduction, and when asked about his apparent ungratefulness by Yata (another member of the gang), snaps back with an insult in a language he’s fairly sure the other boy can’t understand. It’s only when he’s scolded by a senior member of the gang, Kusanagi, that he even gives his name, still refraining from giving any explanation for being passed out in the street, and quickly brushing off any concerns Fujishima has for his scrawny appearance or possibly fragile health.

The next day, he’s still at the clan’s base of operations, still ignoring any questions. All that’s known about him is that he apparently has nowhere to go, or so he’s told Fujishima—and that, according to Totsuka, he resembles a Golden Retriever Fujishima once rescued from the streets (and who was just as unfriendly). It also becomes obvious he doesn’t know basic etiquette, responding in a stunted, cranky manner when questioned on it, but eventually following the instructions he’s given. When questioned on his sudden obedience by Yata, he snaps at him again.

Over the following days he hangs around the bar doing essentially nothing, until Totsuka suggests joining HOMRA if he truly has nowhere to go. He storms out without a word, though appears strangely calm when Fujishima follows him out to apologize. However, he reiterates that Eric would be welcome to join the group should he be able to pass the initiation. Eric points out Fujishima’s habit of bringing in stray animals, unable to turn anyway anything he finds in need. He seems to find it fitting, as he states (after Fujishima denies treating him like one of his animals) that he IS a dog—before being interrupted by his phone ringing. He’s audibly fearful as he answers it, expression frightened and hands shaking as he picks up.

He’s next seen approaching a sleeping Mikoto, the leader of the gang, who awakes with a start and sends out waves of his destructive aura. While Eric remains unhurt, he bolts instantly, leaving Totsuka to find the damage and hear a warning of his ‘murderous intent’ from Mikoto. Fujishima sees Eric out in an alley afterward, talking on his phone again, telling an unknown party that he was almost burned to ashes. He agrees to something, asking them to ‘spare the women and children’, mentioning Totsuka.

What he was speaking of becomes apparent when he meets Totsuka alone and attempts to stab him—only stopped by Fujishima grabbing the knife in his own hand. Together they corner Eric, pulling down the arm of his sweatshirt to reveal numerous scars and bruises, and force him to reveal his situation. He tells them he’s the dog of a yakuza gang HOMRA’s had dealings with in the past, kept as an animal after his parents died and forced to follow order in return for being kept alive. He was first ordered to kill Mikoto, and then Totsuka, and if he fails to do the latter he’ll be killed himself, as a ‘dog’ that doesn’t follow commands has no use. When Fujishima questions why he didn’t ask for help, Eric tells them he has no business being rescued by them. Totsuka then admits that he knew Eric was going to try to kill him, but says he knew he wasn’t thinking ‘kill’. He goes on to say that Fujishima’s easy to take advantage of, and Eric should use this opportunity. Only then does he say ‘help me’.

After Mikoto learns of what happens and decimates the remains of Eric’s ‘owners’, Fujishima attempts to take the blame for bringing him into HOMRA’s headquarters. Eric stops him and steps forward, saying that he’s prepared to bear the burden of his own actions. Mikoto grabs his head, engulfing it in flames, but Eric remains unharmed. It turns out he’s been made a clansman of the red king, and inducted into HOMRA.

Though it’s been almost a year since that, Eric remains mostly unchanged. He’s still brusque and stingy enough with his words to be almost silent, preferring to hang back and watch instead of engaging anything or anyone directly. Whether it’s because of his lack of experience communicating with other or just because he doesn’t like to is hard to say, but he does seem to get along well enough when he runs into someone patient enough to wade through his long silences. Others who press him on things or try to push him too much won’t get anything more than clipped insults and a cold shoulder, as his interactions with Yata showcase.

Being in a more positive environment has improved his initial reactions in general, but some things are hard to change, especially with relatively so little time gone by. He still startles easily, which causes him to withdraw more often than snap in retaliation. When he does take a liking to someone, it’s hard for him to express it, most often simply following them around at a distance like a lost puppy, too afraid of embarrassment or rejection to approach them outright. While he prefers to remove himself from a situation should confrontation arise, if he’s standing with other members of the red clan he’ll stand his ground.
